Are you interested in groundbreaking research employing intense infrared/THz radiation in high magnetic fields and starting a new research group? If so, join HFML-FELIX as an Associate or Full Professor at the Faculty of Science at Radboud University.
HFML-FELIX builds on a strong background in advanced spectroscopy in high magnetic fields and with intense infrared/THz radiation and has now started to expand these activities towards the world-unique combination of both techniques.
As an Associate or Full Professor, you will set up a new research line at this novel interface of highest DC magnetic fields and intense infrared/THz radiation and exploit the exceptional opportunities for control and manipulation of matter. Possible areas of interest cover a broad spectrum including pulsed magnetic resonance techniques at the highest DC magnetic fields, control of quantum materials, ultra-fast dynamics of spins, charge and lattice, as well as out-of-equilibrium phenomena and THz spectroscopy. Within your field of expertise, you will also actively contribute to our institute's user programme and collaborate with researchers within HFML-FELIX and the national HFML-FELIX partnership, as well as with national and international user groups.
Researchers at HFML-FELIX use an array of experimental techniques in high magnetic fields, such as magneto-transport, magneto-optics, magnetisation and torque magnetometry, dilatometry, and infrared and ultrafast laser spectroscopy, to perform groundbreaking research on condensed matter systems and beyond. We will encourage you to develop new experimental techniques within your research line to further explore the unique possibilities of our facility, which will also strengthen our user programme.
Strong collaborations exist with experimental and theoretical groups within the Institute for Molecules and Materials, which covers a broad spectrum of research topics in biochemistry, organic chemistry, condensed matter and molecular physics. In your role, you will actively work on the acquisition of external funding and build a research group comprising postdoctoral research associates, PhD candidates and undergraduate project students and, possibly, technicians.
As an Associate or Full Professor, you will lead an independent research group with an internationally competitive research programme that aligns with and enhances the capabilities of HFML-FELIX, acquire research funding, possibly in collaboration with external academic and/or industrial partners, and supervise and guide PhD candidates and other scientific staff. Your teaching activities will be part of the Educational Institutes for Physics and Astronomy.

We seek an enthusiastic scientist with a convincing track record and the potential to conduct research employing intense infrared/THz radiation in high magnetic fields and initiate a novel, internationally recognised research area within HFML-FELIX.
- You are an internationally acknowledged researcher with a PhD degree in biochemistry or physics, who aims to use the extreme conditions created by the high magnetic fields and intense laser radiation to study, control and manipulate molecules and/or materials.
- You know how to combine research with inspirational teaching and organisational tasks, showing clear leadership.
- You are a researcher who participates in projects of a multidisciplinary nature and who is willing to take part in the shared responsibilities for the user programme of HFML-FELIX including the development of new experimental techniques.
- You are a supervisor with experience in the guidance of undergraduate and graduate students and have the potential to mentor postdoctoral researchers and other scientific staff.
- You have shown competence in acquiring external funding for your research.
- You are willing to collaborate and represent our institute in local, national and international research networks and organisations.
- You are a person who has a collegial spirit and a willingness to support others in attaining success on an individual and institutional level.
You will be appointed as a group leader at HFML-FELIX and as an Associate or Full Professor at the faculty of Science at Radboud University.
- Depending on your scientific track record and experience you will be appointed as an Associate Professor or Full Professor.
- As a Full Professor we will give you an indefinite contract. Your salary within salary scale H2 depends on your previous education and number of years of (relevant) work experience. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
- As an Associate Professor we will give you a temporary employment contract of 18 months with the prospect of an indefinite contract. Your salary within salary scale 13 or 14 depends on your relevant work experience and, consequently, the tasks you will perform. The amounts in the scale are based on a 38-hour working week.
- You will receive an 8% holiday allowance and an 8,3% end-of-year bonus.
- For permanent scientific staff positions, there may be an opportunity for Dual Career Coaching. Dual Career Coaching assists your partner via support, tools, and resources to improve their chances of independently finding employment in the Netherlands.
- You will receive extra days off. With full-time employment, you can choose between 30 or 41 days of annual leave instead of the statutory 20.

At HFML-FELIX , a unique international research facility, our mission is to perform groundbreaking research by enabling molecules and materials to be taken to the extremes of modern-day technology, both in terms of (persistent) magnetic field strength and intense radiation in the infrared and terahertz (THz) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Our scientists and engineers are closely working together to enable new scientific discoveries carried out by both external and in-house user groups using cutting-edge and innovative instrumentation. HFML-FELIX currently comprises six research groups covering a broad research portfolio within 4 different research topic lines ranging from condensed matter science to biomolecular chemistry. In addition, HFML-FELIX has a strong programme in magnet technology and free-electron laser technology and operates as a national partnership together with several national stakeholders.
As an NWO research institute, HFML-FELIX is part of a large national collaboration consisting of Radboud University, NWO (Dutch Research Council) and eight other Dutch universities. HFML-FELIX has its own International Scientific Advisory Committee and National Science Program Council. Our team consists of professors, scientists, technicians, office staff, postdoctoral researchers, PhD candidates and undergraduate students. This ensures a diverse and innovative working culture.
