Warehouse Manager
This role is responsible for the overall day-to-day management and efficient operation of the warehouse, ensuring that goods are received, stored, picked, packed, dispatched and returned accurately and efficiently. The Warehouse Manager will lead and develop the warehouse team, allocate resources effectively, maintain high standards of stock accuracy and warehouse organisation, and ensure that all health and safety and company procedures are followed.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced warehouse professional with strong leadership and organisational skills, excellent attention to detail, and a proactive approach to improving processes, productivity and team performance.
Key Responsibilities
Warehouse Operations:
- Take overall responsibility for the day-to-day running and performance of the warehouse.
- Oversee all warehouse activities, including Goods In, stock storage, picking, packing, dispatch and Returns.
- Ensure all warehouse processes are carried out accurately, efficiently and in accordance with company procedures.
- Maintain a clean, organised and efficient warehouse environment.
- Identify opportunities to improve warehouse processes, productivity and efficiency.
- Ensure customer orders are processed and dispatched accurately and within required timescales.
Goods In Management:
- Oversee and coordinate the receiving and inspection of incoming goods to ensure accuracy and quality.
- Ensure all goods are checked, recorded and stored correctly, following established procedures.
- Work closely with suppliers and internal departments to resolve discrepancies, shortages, damaged goods and delivery issues.
- Ensure stock is correctly labelled, located and entered into the relevant systems.
- Monitor Goods In performance and identify opportunities to improve efficiency.
Stock Management & Inventory Control:
- Take responsibility for maintaining accurate stock levels and inventory records.
- Ensure regular stock checks and cycle counts are completed and discrepancies investigated promptly.
- Investigate stock variances, missing items and system discrepancies, implementing corrective actions where required.
- Ensure stock is stored safely, securely and in a way that maximises available warehouse space.
- Work closely with relevant departments to resolve stock-related issues.
- Monitor slow-moving, damaged or obsolete stock and ensure appropriate action is taken.
Returns Processing:
- Oversee the processing of returned goods, ensuring they are documented, inspected and correctly sorted for restocking, repair or disposal.
- Ensure returned goods are processed efficiently and in line with company procedures.
- Identify recurring issues with returned goods and work with relevant departments to improve processes and reduce unnecessary returns.
- Collaborate with Customer Service and other departments to resolve issues relating to returned goods and quality control.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Lead, manage and motivate the warehouse team to achieve operational and company objectives.
- Ensure team members are adequately trained in warehouse procedures, systems, health and safety and quality standards.
- Provide ongoing coaching, feedback and support to improve individual and team performance.
- Conduct regular performance reviews and address any performance or conduct issues appropriately.
- Identify training and development opportunities to support the growth of team members.
- Foster a positive, professional and collaborative working environment.
Work Allocation & Team Coordination:
- Plan and allocate daily warehouse workloads to ensure all areas are adequately resourced.
- Ensure team members have clear priorities and sufficient work to maintain productivity.
- Coordinate staffing levels and resources across Goods In, Returns, Picking, Packing and Dispatch.
- Adjust workloads and priorities in response to changing business requirements.
- Monitor team productivity and take appropriate action where performance falls below expected standards.
Performance & Operational Management:
- Monitor key warehouse performance indicators, including productivity, stock accuracy, order accuracy and dispatch performance.
- Set clear expectations and performance standards for the warehouse team.
- Identify operational bottlenecks and implement solutions to improve efficiency.
- Ensure warehouse processes support excellent customer service and on-time order fulfilment.
- Work closely with management and other departments to ensure the warehouse supports wider business objectives.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of new warehouse processes and systems.
Health, Safety & Compliance:
- Take responsibility for maintaining high standards of health and safety throughout the warehouse.
- Ensure all warehouse staff follow company health and safety procedures.
- Carry out and support regular warehouse safety checks and risk assessments.
- Ensure equipment, racking, storage areas and working spaces are maintained in a safe condition.
- Ensure all relevant warehouse legislation, policies and company procedures are followed.
- Report and investigate accidents, incidents and near misses as required.
- Ensure appropriate PPE is used and that warehouse staff are trained in safe working practices.
Issue Resolution:
- Act as the main point of contact for operational issues within the warehouse.
- Investigate and resolve issues relating to damaged goods, missing stock, delivery discrepancies, picking/packing errors and system inaccuracies.
- Work proactively to identify the root cause of recurring problems and implement preventative measures.
- Escalate significant operational issues to senior management where appropriate.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in a warehouse supervisory or management role.
- Strong leadership and people-management skills.
- Good understanding of warehouse operations, stock control and inventory management.
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to resolving operational issues.
- Ability to prioritise workloads and remain effective in a fast-paced environment.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively with other departments.
- Experience using warehouse management systems and/or stock management software.
- Knowledge of health and safety requirements within a warehouse environment.
- Forklift certification or willingness to obtain one is an advantage.
- Full UK driving licence is an advantage.
