How do you make our customers happy?
Team Observability and Insights is responsible for providing a fast, reliable, secure and highly
available observability platform for the application and infrastructure teams within bol. This
means that our core customer is a bit different than what you might expect – we focus on the
needs of bol’s application development teams (not directly with consumers on our online store).
Our observability platform allows application teams to troubleshoot, debug and monitor their
applications. Observability (metrics, logging and tracing) is critical for bol to deliver services that
can handle high demand, high load, and failure scenarios.
What you’ll do as a platform engineer on Team Observability and Insights
What are our products?
The Observability and Insights team is responsible for providing a company-wide observability
platform that has three primary components: logging, tracing, and metrics. Our team is responsible for all components and pipelines that ingest, transform, index and make this data
available for application teams, including 3rd party tools for external monitoring and Incident
Response Management (IRM). We provide and maintain all the tools necessary for other teams
to monitor their applications, create alerts and get insights into the performance of their
applications. We tie this data into an IRM workflow so that teams can quickly get alerted when
things go wrong.
Who is on the team?
You’ll be joining a diverse team of platform engineers with a dedicated Lead Engineer, supported by a strong partnership between Engineering and Product managers. Our team works closely with our (internal) customers to build and shape a roadmap that focuses on improving the developer experience when it comes to the observability stack.
What will I do?
Participate in architectural discussions around scalability/resilience/cost Collaborate ondeveloper-facing tooling architecture: query performance, data retention policies, and selfservice dashboard design
Add: Build and maintain developer-facing observability tooling (dashboards, query interfaces, alerting rules) that align with application team workflows
Identify, design, operate, and improve the observability ecosystem by partnering with
application teams to understand debugging/monitoring workflows and design intuitive query& visualization tools.
Maintain a mature observability stack in a high-demand environment by optimizing
log/metric/tracing pipelines for developer usability, reducing MTTR and query friction.
Collaborate on developer-facing tooling architecture with a focus on query performance, data retention policies, and self-service dashboard design, addressing concerns regarding resiliency, usability, and cost.
Join our daytime on-call rotation where you’ll respond to platform-level incidents. Every weeka different engineer takes support to answer questions from within bol, as well as
troubleshoot issues when alarms go off.
