Albert Heijn is a renowned supermarket chain that has been serving customers across the Netherlands for over 130 years. Founded in 1887 by Albert Heijn, the company has grown to become one of the most trusted and beloved grocery retailers in the country. With a commitment to quality, convenience, and customer satisfaction, Albert Heijn has become an integral part of daily life in the Netherlands.
Albert Heijn is accelerating in becoming a Food & Tech company. That is where AH Technology comes into the picture. With a focus on Data, Digital and Tech, we at Albert Heijn strive to deliver high-quality products where technology plays an important role.
Within AH Technology, the Managed Azure Databricks (MAD) team provides a secure, compliant and high-performing data platform so product and data teams can unlock the full potential of their data.
Your new team and office
You'll join a small, senior engineering team (around 6 people) with full ownership of the platform: infrastructure as code, CI/CD and platform automation, end to end.
It's not a specialist role in the same week you might be deep in Terraform, writing Python automation, and reworking a CI/CD pipeline.
The platform you'll help run isn't a single, contained system: it's used across multiple brands and regions, with other teams building on top of it and depending on its stability.
That brings real complexity, inter-team dependencies, shared standards across business units, and a growing footprint and real challenges:
-
Improving deployment stability, reliability and speed
-
Scaling our platform to support Europe and, eventually, a global footprint
-
Supporting a much larger scale of usage than today, without losing the guardrails that keep it safe
At Albert Heijn, you team up with inspiring peers in the data, digital and tech domains. You will work in the MAD team, part of the Data Differentiation Platform, building and operating our Azure-based Databricks platform so that data scientists and engineers across the company can work safely and efficiently at scale.
Our teams work in a hybrid way: both from home and in the office. We are located right next to the train station in Zaandam. We think it's important to be part of a high-belonging team; a team where you can be yourself and feel safe, accepted and appreciated.
For this job we are preferably looking for someone who brings diversity to our team in the widest possible sense. Someone who is a great addition by bringing other ideas to the table.
Don't check all the boxes? That's fine, we probably don't either. If you think you are up for the challenge, we're happy to have a look at your resume.
What will you do?
As a Senior Platform Engineer in the MAD team you:
-
Build & operate our Azure-based platform at scale, applying platform engineering principles to deliver reliable, self-service capabilities for our data and product teams.
-
Design and maintain CI/CD workflows and Linux-based tooling, ensuring smooth, automated and secure delivery across the MAD landscape.
-
Innovate on architecture, reliability and security, proactively identifying improvements and automating processes to drive efficiency.
-
Manage infrastructure through a GitOps way of working, treating Git as the single source of truth with versioned, reviewable and auditable changes.
-
Enable engineers and stakeholders by providing clear guardrails, documentation and guidance on how to use our platform safely and effectively.
-
Help the platform scale beyond its current footprint, as we grow from a single-region setup towards supporting Europe and, eventually, a global user base.
What we offer.
At Albert Heijn we aim to grow, and this is only possible if you grow along with us. As we work together to build our brand and your career, you can count on (based on 40 hours per week):
-
An annual salary up to 106K including holiday allowance and a flexible bonus. Depending on your experience;
-
A minimum of 20 days paid vacation, optionally 12.5 days extra. Do you want to take that extra time off, or would you rather convert the extra days into discounts or sell them for cash? You’re the end boss!;
-
Flexible working hours;
-
Access to a challenging training curriculum – AH Tech Academy;
-
An excellent pension plan where we as an employer contribute 4,5 more than you as an employee;
-
A travel allowance or a NS-business card for traveling to and from Zaandam by train;
-
Attractive discounts on various insurance policies;
-
10% staff discount on groceries in all Albert Heijn stores, to a maximum of €300 per year;
-
A free Mijn Albert Heijn Premium membership.
The recipe for maximum impact.
-
5+ years of experience as a Software Engineer / DevOps Engineer, including real production ownership.
-
3+ years of hands-on Infrastructure as Code experience (e.g. Terraform), building reusable, versioned, maintainable modules across multiple environments.
-
Strong Python: typed, tested, and comfortable building automation against cloud REST APIs/SDKs.
-
Deep cloud knowledge (preferably Azure): networking (private endpoints, NSGs, hub-spoke), storage, IAM/RBAC (Entra ID).
-
Strong communication skills and happy to support users on our platform.
-
CI/CD pipeline engineering experience (e.g. GitHub Actions): able to design reusable pipelines and workflows that run on Linux runners.
-
A generalist mindset: happy moving between infrastructure, automation and CI/CD.
Nice to have
-
Databricks administration experience, understanding of concepts such as Delta Lake and Unity Catalog.
-
Familiarity with observability and structured logging.
