At Growy we believe it’s our collective responsibility to seek solutions that help attain sustainability and deal with larger social and environmental issues. We are the first large-scale commercial vertical farm in the Netherlands, using water and energy efficiently while remaining completely pesticide-free. In Amsterdam, we grow salads, herbs, and microgreens by combining extensive agricultural experience with cutting-edge technology to deliver high-quality, on-demand fresh greens.
To build the farm of the future, we need world‑class technology — and this is where you come in.
We are looking for an experienced Electrical Systems Engineer to join our engineering team and help build the next generation of vertical farming equipment.
You will own the electrical architecture of our machines, from concept and design through commissioning and continuous improvement. Your primary responsibilities include designing electrical control systems, control cabinets, wiring, and industrial communication networks for our food production equipment. Our machines are relatively lightweight compared to traditional industrial machinery, but they demand the same high standards of reliability, safety, and maintainability.
This role combines solid engineering fundamentals with practical implementation. You are equally comfortable designing a new control cabinet, writing embedded firmware, troubleshooting electrical issues on the shop floor and commissioning a new production line.
What you will do:
- Design complete electrical systems for new machines and production equipment.
-
Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control cabinet layouts.
-
Design and implement industrial communication networks, primarily CAN bus and Modbus.
-
Understand, adjust and upload firmware for Controllino controllers using C++.
-
Select electrical components and define electrical architectures that are robust, serviceable, and cost-effective.
-
Design systems with a strong focus on EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) and EMI (Electromagnetic Interference), ensuring compliance with applicable standards and reliable operation in industrial environments.
-
Ensure compliance with relevant machinery, electrical, and CE regulations throughout the design process.
-
Produce complete, accurate, and well-structured documentation, including schematics, bills of materials, wiring schedules, test procedures, and technical documentation.
-
Support machine assembly, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
-
Improve and optimize existing production lines through practical engineering solutions.
-
Perform on-site installations and upgrades when required, including work outside normal production hours to minimize production downtime.
-
Work closely with mechanical, software, and production engineers to develop reliable, maintainable, and scalable machines.
What We Offer
-
The opportunity to help shape the future of sustainable food production.
-
A technically challenging role with significant ownership and autonomy.
-
A collaborative engineering environment where practical solutions matter.
-
The opportunity to influence the complete electrical architecture of innovative vertical farming systems.
-
26 days off per year.
-
Commute allowance up to 250 euros per month
-
Pension plan - we cover 60% of the premium
-
Paid volunteering day per year
-
Fresh vitamins daily — we lunch together, and there’s always plenty of fruit and salad;
-
A diverse and inspiring team of ~90 people from all around the world, united by the mission to make a positive impact;
If you are passionate about building reliable industrial equipment, enjoy solving complex engineering challenges, and take pride in delivering robust, well-documented systems, we'd love to hear from you.
What We're Looking For
-
Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation, or a related field.
-
Strong theoretical understanding of electrical engineering combined with excellent hands-on practical skills.
-
Proven experience designing industrial electrical systems and control cabinets.
-
Experience with industrial communication protocols such as CAN bus and Modbus.
-
Experience developing embedded firmware in C++ for Controllino controllers or similar embedded control platforms.
-
Deep understanding of EMC/EMI principles, applicable standards, and practical mitigation techniques, including grounding, shielding, cable routing, filtering, and noise reduction.
-
Thorough knowledge of applicable electrical standards, machinery directives, and CE compliance.
-
Able to work independently and take ownership of projects from concept through commissioning.
-
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
-
Comfortable working on production equipment and troubleshooting under real operating conditions.
-
Highly organized, detail-oriented, and committed to delivering flawless documentation.
-
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
-
Flexible and willing to occasionally work outside regular production hours when installations or upgrades require it.
Nice to Have
-
Experience designing machinery for the food processing industry.
-
Experience with electrical CAD packages such as EPLAN or AutoCAD Electrical.
-
Knowledge of machine safety, risk assessment, and functional safety concepts.
-
Experience commissioning integrated systems involving sensors, actuators, motor drives, and industrial I/O.
