Summer Internship - Material Processing & Lab Support - Rotterdam - 4 days per week
At everox, we are working on scaling technology that turns waste concrete into circular building materials, reducing the CO₂ emissions in one of the world’s most polluting industries. This internship focuses on experimental and materials-related data generated in our R&D labs and pilot environment.
About everox
everox is a Dutch climate-tech company focused on upcycling waste concrete into low-carbon substitutes for cement, sand, and aggregates. Cement production accounts for ~8% of global CO₂ emissions, while billions of tons of concrete waste are generated every year.
At our Rotterdam R&D pilot and laboratory facility, affectionately known internally as “the Garden”, we operate our pilot plant and laboratory where new materials are processed, formulated, and tested.
The internship
As we ramp up testing campaigns over the summer to support pilot plant operations and validate new cementitious formulations, we are looking for an enthusiastic intern to join us in the Garden. You will work hands-on with both material processing equipment and laboratory testing, supporting our cement lab technician, pilot plant operator, and research team.
This is a practical, lab-floor internship where you’ll get exposure to the full chain, from raw waste concrete coming in, through milling and processing, to mortar casting and mechanical testing of the final cementitious materials.
Key question: How can we make material processing and lab testing routines in the ''Garden'' more efficient, traceable, and consistent during a high-throughput summer testing season?
What you will do
- Operate material processing equipment (crushers, ball mill, sieves, air jet sieve) to prepare feedstocks and test samples
- Assist with mortar and concrete sample preparation: weighing, mixing, casting, demoulding
- Perform routine physical and mechanical tests on fresh and hardened mortars (flow, density, compressive/flexural strength) following defined SOPs
- Handle sample logistics: receiving from the pilot plant, labelling, curing, conditioning, and storage
- Maintain clear and traceable documentation of all samples, tests, and observations
- Support the cement lab technician and analytical lab techniques such as XRD/XRF/TGA/PSD with sample preparation
- Help keep the lab organized, safe, and audit-ready, including basic equipment checks and maintenance
Expected outcomes
- A well-documented set of processed materials and test results from the summer campaign
- Clean, structured records of samples and test data, ready for handover to R&D
- Practical suggestions to improve lab routines, sample tracking, or processing workflows based on your hands-on experience
What you will learn
- How waste concrete is processed and transformed into circular cementitious materials
- How to work safety-conscious and comfortable in a practical lab and pilot environment
- Hands-on use of industrial-scale processing equipment alongside standard lab apparatus
- Mortar and cement testing methods (EN standards and adapted methods for novel materials)
- How material composition impacts performance, directly from running the tests yourself
- How a fast-moving climate-tech scale-up operates a pilot plant and lab in parallel
Who we’re looking for
- HBO / BSc student in Material Science, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, , Chemical Engineering, Mechatronics or similar
- Hands-on, practical, and not afraid of a fast-paced work environment
- Structured and detail-oriented; you take documentation seriously
- Curious about circular materials, cement, and concrete
- Comfortable working independently within a small technical team
- Fluent in English (Dutch is a plus)
- Available to work on-site in Rotterdam over the summer
What we offer
- 2–3 month summer internship from June - September
- Direct exposure to real engineering challenges in climate-tech
- Mentorship from experienced engineers and scientists
- Travel reimbursement if necessary
- Opportunity to support lab or pilot activities
- Opportunity to grow into a longer internship or future role
- Market based internship allowance (€500-€600 p/month) Interested?
