About the Role
We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Customs Agent (Douanedeclarant) to join our growing logistics team in the Rotterdam region. In this role, you will be responsible for managing import, export, and transit customs operations while ensuring full compliance with Dutch Customs Administration requirements and European Union customs legislation.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in customs brokerage or freight forwarding and possess a strong understanding of Dutch customs procedures, customs documentation, and trade compliance. You will work closely with internal teams, customs authorities, freight forwarders, and logistics partners to facilitate efficient and compliant cross-border operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare, review, and submit import, export, and transit customs declarations using DMS and NCTS systems.
- Coordinate customs clearance activities with freight forwarders, customs authorities, transport providers, and warehouse operators.
- Process customs procedures through Portbase and other logistics platforms.
- Classify goods using HS and TARIC codes and ensure the correct application of Incoterms.
- Support VAT and import duty processes, including Article 23 procedures where applicable.
- Maintain accurate customs records in accordance with Dutch and EU customs regulations.
- Monitor regulatory changes and ensure ongoing customs compliance.
- Assist with customs inspections, audits, and shipment-related investigations.
- Liaise professionally with internal departments, customers, and external stakeholders regarding customs matters.
- Identify opportunities to improve customs processes and operational efficiency.
Requirements
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in Dutch customs brokerage, customs operations, or freight forwarding.
- Practical experience using DMS, NCTS, Portbase, and Microsoft Excel.
- Strong knowledge of Dutch customs procedures and EU customs regulations.
- Experience with HS/TARIC classification and customs documentation.
- Fluency in Dutch (spoken and written) is essential.
- Good command of English for professional communication.
- Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and problem-solving abilities.
- Legal authorization to work in the Netherlands, including possession of a valid BSN number.
Preferred Qualifications
- FENEX, EVO Fenedex, or an equivalent Customs Declarant certification.
- Experience handling customs operations through the Port of Rotterdam.
- Knowledge of Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) procedures and international trade compliance.
- Experience within sea freight, air freight, or e-commerce customs operations.
