THE BACKGROUND
For our client, a European Institution based in Maastricht, we are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer to join a long-term mission in a pan-European civil-military environment, working at least 50% on-site. You will play a key role in building and evolving a modern data platform within a mission-critical environment. Working closely with internal teams, you will design scalable data pipelines, support data migration initiatives, and contribute to the delivery of secure and reliable data solutions.

You have a University degree in IT or related field

English level minimum C1

Minimum 5 years of experience in data engineering projects, including designing, building, and maintaining data pipelines (batch and streaming) using Python, SQL, PySpark.

Minimum 3 years’ experience with data build tools (dbt) for data transformation, modelling (e.g., Python models), testing, and deployment in production environments
-
Minimum 3 years’ experience in Databricks or equivalent distributed data processing environments.
Desirable:

Specialisation in Data Engineering, Big Data Architecture, or Database Management Systems.

Minimum 1 year of Oracle databases experience and familiarity with specific dbt adapters (e.g., dbt-oracle).

Minimum 1 year experience architecting data warehouses or lakehouses (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, Delta Lake) for optimized analytics and cost-efficient storage.

Minimum 1 year experience with Kafka or Kafka Connect for building streaming pipelines, event sourcing, and real-time data ingestion.

Minimum 1 year experience with orchestration tools like Apache Airflow or Databricks Workflows to manage complex dependencies and monitoring.

Minimum 1 year experience of infrastructure as code (Terraform, Pulumi) and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, GCP) for reproducible deployments.

Minimum 1 year experience of data governance practices, including metadata management (e.g., Collibra), data contracts, and quality frameworks.

Strong communicator: Able to translate complex data engineering concepts and architectural decisions clearly to both technical peers and non-technical stakeholders.

Proactive & Autonomous: Self-driven in identifying pipeline bottlenecks and resolving issues independently, while remaining seamlessly aligned with the internal team's objectives.

Adaptable: Highly flexible when dealing with shifting project priorities and comfortable bridging the gap between legacy systems and modern data platforms.

Security-Conscious: Exhibits a strong commitment to data protection, confidentiality, and strict adherence to governance policies in a highly regulated environment.
