We are seeking a Subsurface & Wells Subject Matter Expert (SME) with deep, end-to-end knowledge of the Oil & Gas upstream workflow. This role provides domain leadership across subsurface and wells disciplines, supporting digital, data, and technology initiatives with strong business and technical context.
The SME will bring expertise spanning seismic imaging and interpretation, geological and reservoir modelling, wells design and execution, production optimisation, and WRFM (Wells, Reservoirs, Facilities Management), acting as a bridge between subsurface professionals and digital, data, and engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
Subsurface & Wells Domain Leadership
- Provide expert guidance across the full upstream lifecycle, from exploration through production
- Act as a trusted advisor on subsurface and wells workflows, data, and decision-making
- Ensure domain correctness and relevance of digital, data, and analytics initiatives
- Support value framing and prioritisation of subsurface and wells use cases
End-to-End Upstream Workflow Expertise
- Exploration and appraisal workflows, including seismic acquisition, processing, and interpretation
- Geological modelling, static and dynamic reservoir modelling
- Reservoir engineering, simulation, and optimisation
- Wells planning, drilling, completions, and well integrity
- Production operations, surveillance, and optimisation
- Integrated **WRFM** workflows across wells, reservoirs, and facilities
Digital & Data Enablement
- Support translation of subsurface and wells requirements into digital and data solutions
- Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and solution architects
- Contribute to design and validation of analytics, AI, and decision-support solutions
- Ensure alignment with platforms such as OSDU and subsurface application ecosystems
Stakeholder Engagement & Governance
- Engage with geoscientists, wells engineers, production engineers, and leadership
- Support governance, standards, and best practices across subsurface and wells domains
- Contribute to workshops, reviews, and decision forums
- Mentor and support less experienced domain specialists
Required Skills & Experience
Domain Expertise (Oil & Gas)
- Deep understanding of subsurface and wells disciplines, including:
o Seismic processing and interpretation (2D / 3D / 4D)
o Geological and reservoir modelling
o Reservoir simulation and optimisation
o Wells engineering (planning, drilling, completions)
o Production operations and surveillance
o **WRFM** and integrated asset workflows
- Strong understanding of upstream decision-making and value drivers
Tools & Platforms
- Experience with subsurface and wells applications such as:
o Petrel, OpenWorks, DecisionSpace (or equivalents)
o Reservoir simulation tools
o Production and surveillance systems
o Familiarity with subsurface data standards and ecosystems
- Exposure to OSDU concepts and digital subsurface platforms is a strong advantage
Digital & Data Literacy
- Ability to work effectively with data, analytics, and AI teams
- Understanding of data-driven workflows, analytics, and optimisation approaches
- Comfortable operating in digital transformation and innovation contexts
Soft Skills & Competencies
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences
- Ability to operate at both strategic and detailed levels
- Collaborative and pragmatic mindset
- Credibility with subsurface and wells professionals
- Ability to challenge and guide constructively
Education & Background
- Degree in Geoscience, Petroleum Engineering, Reservoir Engineering, or a related discipline
- Typically 10-15+ years of experience in upstream Oil & Gas roles
- Proven experience working across multiple subsurface and wells disciplines
- Experience in integrated asset teams and complex operating environments
Nice to Have
- Experience with Shell or other major IOC operating models
- Involvement in digital subsurface or OSDU-related programmes
- Exposure to portfolio management, asset planning, or decision analysis
- Experience supporting innovation, POCs, or technology scale-up
