About the Role
FeX Energy is developing dense, stable, safe, and fully decarbonized energy storage using iron. We are now moving from problem/solution fit toward first-of-a-kind deployment (FOAK), and our immediate commercial priority is clear: secure strong customer commitments for FOAK projects.
We are hiring a Commercial Development Lead to lead this effort. This is a hands-on individual contributor role with high ownership and direct exposure to company strategy.
The role is focused on identifying, qualifying, and advancing high-potential industrial customers toward signed LOIs and other concrete commitments that support FeX's first deployments, fundraising, and commercial validation.
Reporting to the CEO and working closely with the CTO, technical team, and leadership team, you will own the FOAK customer pipeline from early engagement through signed commitment. You will build trust with industrial decision-makers, understand their operational and economic drivers, translate customer needs into clear internal requirements, and help FeX focus its limited resources on the highest-probability deployment pathways.
What you will own
FOAK customer development
- Build and manage a focused pipeline of high-potential industrial customers for FeX’s first FOAK deployments.
- Identify and qualify customers with strong potential for early deployment based on site fit, energy needs, willingness to collaborate, strategic value, funding potential, and decision timeline.
- Advance priority accounts from initial engagement through discovery, qualification, technical validation, stakeholder alignment, and signed LOI.
- Convert customer interest into concrete commitments and evidence of serious demand.
- Develop account plans for priority opportunities, including stakeholder maps, decision processes, blockers, commercial drivers, and next steps.
- Distinguish real customer pull from general interest, innovation theatre, or low-probability conversations.
Commercial strategy and pipeline discipline
- Define and maintain a clear FOAK qualification process, including stage gates, evidence required at each stage, and criteria for prioritization.
- Build a disciplined business development pipeline aligned with FeX’s FOAK strategy and company growth objectives.
- Focus commercial effort on a small number of high-probability pathways rather than maximizing broad pipeline volume.
- Track and report pipeline progress, customer evidence, conversion risks, and next-step commitments.
- Use customer insights to inform FeX’s market focus, ideal customer profile, value proposition, and go-to-market strategy.
Customer value and technical translation
- Lead customer discovery to deeply understand industrial energy needs, operational constraints, economics, decarbonization goals, and buying criteria.
- Work with the CTO and technical team to translate customer requirements into clear deployment assumptions, technical inputs, and product requirements.
- Support techno-economic and equipment sizing analyses that demonstrate the value of FeX’s solution for specific customer use cases.
- Develop customer-facing materials that clearly explain FeX’s value proposition, deployment pathway, and commercial roadmap.
- Collaborate with engineering to ensure customer needs and FOAK deployment realities are reflected in design and project planning.
FOAK project and partnership development
- Secure customer and partner participation in FOAK project pathways, including industrial hosts, strategic partners, and funders.
- Support fundraising and non-dilutive funding efforts by generating credible customer evidence, LOIs, and market validation.
- Help structure early customer commitments, including LOIs, MOUs, pilot agreements, and related commercial documents.
- Support contract discussions and negotiations in collaboration with the CEO and relevant advisors.
- Represent FeX in targeted customer meetings, site visits, partner discussions, and industry events where they directly support FOAK conversion.
What success looks like
- In the first 3 months, you will have developed a clear understanding of FeX’s technology, value proposition, target markets, and FOAK criteria. You will have assessed the existing pipeline, identified the highest-potential customer pathways, and established a disciplined process for advancing opportunities.
- In the first 6 months, you will have built and actively managed a focused FOAK pipeline, advanced priority accounts through clear qualification gates, and created strong customer evidence to support FeX’s deployment and fundraising strategy.
- In the first 12 months, success means securing signed LOIs and/or equivalent customer commitments that materially advance FeX’s first FOAK deployment pathways.
- Success in this role will not be measured by the number of introductory meetings alone. It will be measured by qualified customer progression, strength of customer evidence, quality of customer commitments, and contribution to defined and fundable FOAK projects.
About you
- At FeX, we hire first for attitude and purpose, then for skills and experience. You are motivated by the opportunity to help industry decarbonize using iron-based energy storage, and you align strongly with our values of trust, care, and impact.
- You are commercially disciplined, customer-facing, and comfortable operating in ambiguity. You know how to build trust with industrial decision-makers, qualify real demand, and drive complex opportunities toward concrete next steps. You are not satisfied with interesting conversations alone; you want to convert interest into commitment.
You are likely a strong fit if you have:
- 4–8+ years of experience in complex B2B business development, industrial sales, strategic accounts, project development, customer development, or related roles.
- Evidence that you have personally advanced complex technical opportunities with real customers, even if you have not held a senior title.
- Experience moving customers from early interest to concrete commitment, such as LOIs, MOUs, pilot agreements, project development agreements, or other evidence of serious customer demand.
- Experience working with industrial, energy, infrastructure, cleantech, manufacturing, heat/steam, power, or other technically complex markets.
- Strong ability to navigate multi-stakeholder buying processes involving technical, operational, financial, sustainability, procurement, and executive stakeholders.
- Comfort developing early-stage, first-of-a-kind, or not-yet-standardized technical solutions with customers.
- Strong commercial judgment and the ability to qualify opportunities rigorously.
- Ability to understand customer economics and connect technical solutions to business value.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
- Ability to work closely with technical teams and translate customer needs into useful internal inputs.
- Self-management, ownership, and urgency in moving opportunities forward.
- Willingness to travel for customer meetings, site visits, partner discussions, and targeted industry events.
Strong assets include:
- Experience with industrial heat, steam, thermal energy storage, industrial decarbonization, energy storage, hydrogen, electrification, power generation, or project-based infrastructure.
- Experience with European industrial energy markets.
- Existing network among industrial energy users, manufacturers, utilities, EPCs, ESCOs, OEMs, strategic partners, or decarbonization stakeholders.
- Experience developing FOAK, pilot, demonstration, or early commercial projects.
- Experience supporting fundraising, grant applications, or non-dilutive funding through customer evidence and partner commitments.
Work Term
- Location: Europe, with flexibility for travel and in-person collaboration in Montreal
- Compensation: Base salary of €70,000-€90,000, depending on experience and qualifications, plus benefits and equity. A performance-based bonus may also be offered.
- Opportunity for professional development and growth within a fast-paced startup environment.
- Travel may be required for business meetings, conferences, and industry events.
